1st birthday Cake smash

Cake Smash Sessions

Your baby’s first birthday is a milestone worth celebrating, full of personality, smiles, and a little bit of mess. My cake smash sessions are designed to capture all the joy and wonder of this special age in a relaxed, beautifully styled setting.

The studio is warm and welcoming, with carefully chosen outfits and props included to create a timeless look. You can choose to have the cake provided as part of your package, or bring your own based on an example I’ll send to ensure it photographs beautifully and matches the setup!

Each session includes time for classic portraits before the cake, followed by the fun, messy celebration itself, creating natural, heartfelt images you’ll treasure long after their first birthday has passed.

Icing is very important and needs to look as white as possible!

Tips...

This simple yet stunning semi-naked cake is the ideal choice for a cake smash session. Its minimalist design keeps the focus on your little one while still looking effortlessly elegant in photos. The soft, rustic frosting and natural tones complement any backdrop, whether you’re shooting outdoors, in a studio, or at home.

To achieve that clean, white finish seen here:

Option 1: White Buttercream
Use unsalted butter and whip it for several minutes until pale and fluffy before adding icing sugar.
Add a tiny drop of purple food gel to neutralize any yellow tint (yes, purple cancels yellow!).
For an even whiter result, mix in a spoonful of bright white gel food colouring (brands like Wilton or Sugarflair work great).

Option 2: Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting
Combine cream cheese, butter, and icing sugar for a softer, slightly tangy frosting.
Again, whip well and use a touch of white food colour if needed.
For the soft, rustic “semi-naked” style:
Apply a thin layer of icing with an offset spatula, then gently scrape off the excess to let a bit of the cake peek through.
